The story takes place in eighth century Ireland and it follows a young boy named Brendan. The animation style is really wonderful because it tries to mimic the artwork of the carpet pages in the real book It also includes some super cool Celtic mythology. It's become a classic in the Medieval and Renaissance department at my uni.
There is a real book of Kells, and it was ca 8th century. It might be one of the most beautiful things you ever get to see if you are ever in Ireland.
Last semester I got the opportunity to work with a full size, full color facsimile of it.
And I will shut up and about boring, old, dusty books now. Sorry.
So much universe, so little time...
