Author of City of Ember, and the following series...
I'm up to the third book in The Books of Ember (The Prophet of Yonwood). I have a few comments to make:
Her style, which so captivated me in the first book, has not shifted between books. I suppose I should enjoy the consistency, but I actually don't. The first book was great, the second was interesting, but not as great. The third? I'm still warming up to it, far past the halfway point. I'm blowing through it, but that's mostly because it's extremely light reading, and the print might be a little big. I'm still trying to figure out how it fits in with the rest of the series chronologically...
All in all, I do like that it's good, clean writing, and some of the author's comments on things (via her writing) almost serve as a warning to those prone to passivity or paranoia, etc. –– both are dangerous extremes, no matter what the subject. I guess you'd have to read it to understand that remark... She also tries to keep you guessing by dropping hints here and there.
It's definitely a kids' series, but it does seem to have some deeper meanings beneath the surface.
All in all, if I weren't borrowing her books from a friend, I probably would not bother with this series.
