Huge Doctor Who news concerning the upcoming anniversary/christmas special today! It is potentially spoilery for those who haven't caught up to the end of series 7 though, so I'll go ahead and tag it.

The new Doctor's been cast. His name is Peter Capaldi.

And here I was worried about possibly spoiling the new doctor and Mojo just spits it out =P

Haha it's fine. I just assumed Matt Smith's regeneration was "plot-centric," so it could have been a spoiler.

So do you know anything about this new Doctor? A quick youtube search gave me little more than the fact that he's a rather menacing Scotsman who is rather fond of coarse language.

That's what I searched for on YouTube. I'm assuming, or at least hoping, his take on the Doctor will be very different from his character in "In the Thick of It." I can't really imagine the Doctor being such an angry, intense character. I'm sure Moffat and the crew know what they're doing with the casting though.

He's not much older than Tom Baker was, is he? I think people have just gotten used to a young Doctor, because that's all he's been since the reboot. I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure most of the classic Doctors were over 40.

Yeah, I'm gonna wait until I see him in action as the doctor before judging.

I don't know. It just seems odd for a character that doesn't age to suddenly-- well-- age... lol

@Gwen: Maybe. Though if you watch the clip I found you might change your mind. I know the f-word carries a less offensive connotation in England, but he dropped it enough times to make even me blush. It just seemed very, unDoctor-like (yes, I did just make that word up )

I'm not opposed to an older Doctor either. I think he'll make an interesting contrast to the new villain introduced at the end of series 7. I'm still hoping to see a female Doctor some day *fingers crossed*

The Doctor's family plot is so convoluted I don't know I we'll ever get a satisfactory conclusion that doesn't retcon something.

Haven't seen the second half of season 7 yet... I think my brother's borrowing it from my parents, which means it'll probably take ages to reach me. lol.

That's an interesting thought. I'm not sure if Time Lords can switch genders during regenerations, though. Romana was able to choose her appearance (or so I'm told), but... no idea. I've also wondered about the Valyard, and whether that's going to come up again (from Trial of a Time Lord, during the Colin Baker days).
