Have you read Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card? It's a YA sci-fi novel about a kid sent to a school that trains children to become war leaders.
The Divergent series by Veronica Roth is also quite good and also a sci-fi YA.

Ah, I see. I liked the series and you would definitely be confused if you read them in the wrong order. However, the later ones just aren't as good as Ender's Game.
So maybe Divergant and Insurgent (though the third book won't be out till fall)
