Nightmare City by Andrew Klavan.
Wow. This book... Hard to describe. Klavan keeps getting deeper and deeper into the spiritual warfare, while still trying to keep his books firmly rooted in "the real world". He is the master of the murder mystery, though he goes about it way different in this tale.
Tom Harding thinks he's in Heaven, then wakes up to the sound of his phone ringing. The connection is bad, but he hears a very worried woman, telling him something, begging for his help. His house is empty, the neighborhood is empty of all life, except a rolling fog that seems to be encroaching on his house. He starts hearing his dead brother's voice coming through the tv speakers, trying to warn him of something. As the fog draws closer, he becomes aware of figures moving within it, big lumbering figures...
It's the perfect setup for a zombie survival book, and for the first few chapters, it sure seems like one, then it flips, and the mystery kicks in. And the pace does not let up for a second. Andrew Klavan is the king of YA novels. I hope he writes another one very, very soon.
"I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you."
